Global Cryptocurrency Economy

There is no doubt that today we live in perhaps the most dynamic global economy the world has ever know. There has never been more capability by the world's nations to exchange goods and services whether it be by air, land or sea. Fiat currencies around the world are converted in value between nations and exchanged daily both digitally and even by hand. An yet there is a looming elephant in the room. Where does cryptocurrency take its place in our global economy? It's no secret that we are in the early stages of adoption all over the globe. Every day there's another tid bit of news with regards to a country's cryptocurrency policies, a crypto exchange, a new blockchain, or a new alliance between those looking to leverage these technologies.

Let's look a little deeper at our global economy and see where cryptocurrency measures up today. It's 2019 and according to wikipedia, the world is sitting at a global GDP of $143,089,492,000,000 USD with China, Europe, the United States, India, and Japan leading the way with GDPs in excess of $11,000,000,000,000 USD. The total cryptocurrency market cap according to coinmarketcap.com is around $181,284,500,000 USD. So, let's skim it down. The world economy is sitting at $143 Trillion USD while the total cryptocurrency market is sitting at $181 Billion USD. So the total cryptocurrency market cap is sitting at one tenth of one percent of the world's GDP.

Let's look at another comparison. The total market cap of the New York Stock Exchange is around 21 Trillion. If we compare this to the total market cap of cryptocurrency, we find that the global cryptocurrency market is almost 1% the size of the NYSE.

So, what does all this mean? Well, if we look at the life span of cryptocurrency, it dates back to the birth of bitcoin in 2009. Since then, there have been over 4000 digital currencies derived. It literally took 10 years for cryptocurrency to garner 1% of what the NYSE touts for it's market cap. All of this and cryptocurrency has yet to achieve mainstream adoption. This was achieved by technical enthusiasts, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs. What happens when institutional investors enter the fray? What happens when companies on the NYSE and NASDAQ begin to leverage blockchain technology? What happens when databases begin to take a back seat to the blockchain paradign? It's a Brave New World!
